New report finds that most small and medium-sized businesses have little confidence in their cyber security

Neligent employees, contractors or third parties caused the most data breaches in small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) according to a new study.

However, almost one-third of the companies surveyed could not even determine the root cause of its data breach.

The Ponemon Institute’s study, which analysed the state of cyber security in SMBs, also revealed that just 14% of the companies surveyed rated their ability to mitigate cyber attacks as highly effective.

Among the findings from 600 IT leaders of businesses between 100 and 1,000 employees, 50% reported that they had data breaches involving customer and employee information in the last 12 months.
